Introduction

 The Center for Marine Materials Corrosion and Protection, established and led by Prof. Guang-Ling Song, is staffed with outstanding corrosion and electrochemical experts and equipped with advanced professional facilities. The fast-growing center is now in a good position to carry out fundamental research addressing theoretical issues at the forefront of corrosion science and undertake industrial projects solve technical problems in practical applications of various materials.

 The main research areas of the center include:

 (1) modern electrochemistry and corrosion theory and methodology;

 (2) environment-friendly, non-toxic and highly-efficient corrosion-protection technology;

 (3) corrosion resistant materials and novel processes.

 Currently, the research work in the center is mainly focused on (1) the corrosion protection of marine materials in various zones, particularly in the deep sea environment, and (2) the corrosion and protection of reinforced concrete. Around these priorities, many important studies initiated from industrial needs and driven by scientific interests are also supported in the center, such as the corrosion of innovative materials (e.g. nano, amorphous metals, composites, functional materials, biomaterials), the protection of materials in extreme service environments (e.g., nuclear power generation, underground exploration, aerospace transportation, medical application), the surface engineering and coating evaluation, etc.

 The center is located in the beautiful garden campus of Xiamen University, standing by the holy South Putuo Temple, a famous historic site in China. It has 500 square meters of laboratory area, 11 professional staff researchers and many advanced corrosion and electrochemical testing equipment. The establishment of the center is a promotion of the traditional corrosion electrochemistry discipline of Xiamen University, which is well-known in the world corrosion and electrochemistry communities. In order to meet new challenges in the field of corrosion science and protection engineering, the Center eagerly looks forward to collaborating with international research and engineering organizations.

    Dr.Guang-Ling Song (Guangling Song,宋光铃) is currently a professor of the College of Materials, the Vice Chair of Professor Committee of the College, a Chief Scientist of the State Key Laboratory of Physical Chemistry of Solid Surfaces, and the President of the Overseas Corrosion & Protection Society of China. He is also an Adjunct Professor of the University of Queensland. Recently, he received the honorary title of the “State Specially Recruited expert/Professor” through the “Thousand Talents Program” from Chinese Government (an award for overseas professors) as a State Specially Recruited Expert.

     Prof. Song’s first PhD in Electrochemistry was awarded in 1993 from the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, where he was appointed as an Associate Professor and the Head of Electrochemistry Division in 1994. He obtained his second PhD degree in Materials Engineering from the University of Queensland in 1997, and then he worked there as a Senior Research Fellow, leading the corrosion research for the Center of Alloys and Solidification Technology until he became a Senior Staff Research Scientist of General Motors R&D Center in Warren in 2007. He had been involved in many auto corrosion projects before joining Oak Ridge National Laboratory as a Senior Research Staff in 2012.

     Prof. Song’s research interests concern electrochemistry and degradation of metals in various environments. He has led many projects in various areas, such as corrosion and protection of alloys, biodegradation of Mg, passivity of steels, corrosion and corrosion detection of reinforcement in concrete structures, underground pipeline corrosion, new electrochemical techniques, inhibitors, coatings, surface treatments and electrochemistry of stress corrosion cracking, etc. His current research fields include: 1) the fundamentals of corrosion electrochemistry, 2) the corrosion mechanism of advanced materials, 3) the electrochemical degradation performance of materials under extreme conditions, and 4) the environment-friendly surface and coatings technology.

    Prof. Song has won many fundamental research grants and been involved in a large number of industrial projects. He has supervised/advised more 25 postgraduate students and postdocs and has published more than 190 journal papers, 3 books, 19 book chapters, 26 patents, over 60 conference presentations (including many keynotes and plenary speeches), and more than 70 industrial reports, as well as numerous invited seminar and presentations. His publications have been SCI-cited over 8800 times with an h-index of 44 according to the ISI Web of Science. Prof. Song is also serving as Specialty Chief Editor, Lead Guest Editor and Editor for several international journals, and has organized and chaired a few corrosion symposiums at international conferences.
